Costa Brava Impressions and Three Restaurant Recommendations

by Anja

At the end of September a litte savorychicks reunion happend in Northern Spain. Sun and Carlos joined our family for two weeks of fun - exploring, eating, swimming, and most of all spending quality time together, catching up, playing with the girls.  Sun turned out to be an amazing yoga teacher for the girls - they enjoyed practising together on the deck of our gorgeous vacation home.

We stayed in L'Escala, at a spacious and modern house. We were just about 100m from the beach, and walking distance to Hostal Empúries (where we had dinner once and also enjoyed a yoga class and a spa day) and even Sant Martí d'Empúries, a little gem of lovely old homes and some  perfect family restaurants.

With the girls in tow we had to make sure we eat at kid-friendly restaurants. So, we had to skip all the outstanding high-end restaurants of the Costa Brava area (El Bulli used to be right here) and put them on our to-do list for the next trip. Instead we ate at various restaurants that offered a great combination of high quality food and relaxing atmosphere. These three are our favorites:
The crowdpleaser: Esculapi in Sant Martí d'Empúries, supernice atmosphere sitting outside at the lively plaza, wonderful service, easy with kids. Many great choices, from pizza to pasta, meats, seafood to tapas. We went back there a few times and always found someting new to try.
The Pintxos place: Calau, located in Calella de Palafrugell. Pintxos are Catalonian tapas - open face sandwiches or "tapas spiked with a toothpick to a piece of bread". This restaurant was our kids' favorite because they got to try many different cute little sandwiches and tapas. The restaurant doesn't take reservations and fills up quickly, so make sure to arrive rather early.
The Japanese place: Far Nomo at the lighthouse of San Sebastián near Llafranc. Beautiful architecture, amazing view (we went there at night, but will next time come back for lunch). Good japanese food and sushi.
While we are already back to Switzerland, Sun and Carlos enjoy more time in Barcelona, Costa Brava and Granada - I'm sure there will be more restaurant recommendations to come soon.
