Value Talk

by Sun

Every once in a while, we'd like to share some important events in our lives with our readers in hopes that our experiences enrich all of us.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to have lived both in the Eastern and Western cultures. This has given me a platform to look at both cultures and merge their best parts to adopt and grow as a person. I want to share my lessons and new perspectives that I’ve learned and still learning, while revealing the challenges we face.

It would have been much simpler and less complicated to share my recipes and food experiences with others but instead, in 2012, I took on a five-years-long challenge to delve into something more complex, delicate, and even risky.

My recently published non-fiction book, Reset: moving Korean culture forward, looks into how my values have evolved from the time I came to the U.S. in 1980 until now. In the book, I talk about them through twelve aspects of the South Korean culture that I hope will change. I probe into the values that helped South Korea leap ahead to achieve the 11th largest economy in the world in one generation and how the very same values are affecting individual lives and their sense of happiness.

Evaluating and adopting values different from ones we know may not be as clear and tangible as sharing recipes. My hope is that if you are curious about and open to different views, there is a very good chance that it may change your feelings, attitudes and eventually the existing culture. It can be a mind-expanding and liberating experience.

On weekends, our dinner table is often filled with friends that have multi-national backgrounds and different upbringing just like that of Savorychicks, which we all embrace and celebrate. I’m grateful for all these talks over meals and to people who have helped me grow and mature as a person. Sharing my evolved values with my fellow Koreans and others feels important to me. It’s my way of closing the gap in our differences and a step forward for us to becoming citizens of the world.

Cheers to our shared values and love to you all!
