Homemade Iced Tea
by Marjan
I generally don’t like to drink anything (even water) with my meals- with the exception of red wine with my steak! Evidently, when you consume liquids with your solid meals, it inhibits some of the natural juices the stomach secrets for digestion. However, most people do enjoy drinking water, soda’s or wine with their meals.
When I am entertaining at home, I find myself in trouble when guests ask me for carbonated drinks (sodas). My conscious as a dentist forbids me to serve any of that at my house. I personally tend to gravitate to water. To compromise, I have come up with my own version of an ‘Arnold Palmer’ that I believe you too will enjoy! You can simply serve my version of this ice tea as the recipe calls for, or spike it up with a shots of vodka to make the party more festive- then you will have to call it ‘Marjan’s Long Island Ice Tea’! Ha!
Ingredients (serves four):
1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice
3 cups of freshly brewed black tea (or 3 cups of hot water with 3 Lipton black tea bags)
2 heaping tablespoon of strawberry preserve
(jars can be made in advance and saved: overnight macerate 1 lb of freshly chopped strawberries with ¼ to ½ cup of sugar. Bring to a gentle boil for thirty minutes. Cool. Place in preserve jars and store in the refrigerator for up to three months.)
½ cup of chilled water
Add sugar to taste
Cool tea in the refrigerator. In a large pitcher, add the tea, lemon juice, strawberry preserve water and sugar to taste. Stir well to dissolve all the sugar graduals. Add ice before serving.
