Summer Drinks

In Switzerland, with its short and often unpredictable summers, we enjoy every hot day with barbecues or garden parties. It’s so much fun to have friends over, relax underneath a shadowing tree and enjoy a refreshing drink. In the heat of a sultry summer afternoon we often prefer to get started with some alcohol-free drinks. I know what you might think – this is only for the wimps, but trust me, some of these drinks are so delicious you won’t miss the booze. And if you do, you can always add a splash or two of your favorite vodka or rum.

So, here are my top two summer drinks:

Coconut-Lime Drink

This drink truly tastes like summer and can be enjoyed with or without alcohol, making it the perfect drink to be enjoyed any time of the day. Without alcohol, it is a true refresher.

Ingredients (for 2):

coconut syrup
2 limes
fresh, cold non-sparkling water
ice cubes
vodka or white rum (optional)

1. Cut limes into wedges, and put an equal amount of wedges into two tall cocktail glasses. Squeeze with a muddle.

2. Add coconut syrup (about 1 inch). You can vary the sweetness of the drinks by adding more or less syrup.

3. If you want to add alcohol, add about 1-2 fl. oz. of vodka or white rum.

4. Add a handful of ice cubes and fill the glass with fresh, cold water. Stir with a long spoon and serve!

Driver’s Mojito
One of the great alcohol-free drinks – the mint makes it so refreshing.

Ingredients (for 2):

Ginger Ale
2 limes
a handful of fresh mint leaves
2 teaspoons brown sugar
ice cubes

1. Put an equal amount of mint leaves into both glasses (reserve some for decoration). Crush with a muddle.

2. Cut limes into wedges, and put an equal amount of wedges into both glasses. Squeeze with the muddle.

3. Add sugar and Ginger Ale, mix well. Add ice cubes and decorate with mint leaves.

Enjoy!
