Tidbits: It's Mulberry Season

by Marjan

Sure, everyone loves strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and now abundant goji berries from the Himalayas. But have you heard of Mulberries? This exquisite, succulent fruit has many different varieties, and unlike most berries, they grow on trees vs. bushes. Exclusive garden stores or Persian nurseries sell mulberry trees which bear fruit during late spring and early summer days. White mulberries are very sweet and red mulberries have a subtle tartness with a sweet after bite. The flavors are delicate, and so is the fruit. Hence, it is rare to find this berry fresh in markets.

However, most Persian stores sell dehydrated white, sweet mulberries. I make my own trail mix with this and incorporate dried nuts such as hazelnut, pistachios, and walnuts for a healthy snack. On our ranch, we have twelve mulberry trees and have been enjoying an abundance of this exotic fruit for the past month; sadly, all too soon, they will stop bearing fruit.
