Grilling Turkey Burgers

by Marjan

Wait a minute! I can’t believe I am writing about turkey burgers!

Recently, I have been experimenting with turkey burgers. I love my beef patties, so in the past, the thought of having a veggie, tuna, salmon, or turkey burger was sacrilegious! I can laugh at myself now as my saying had always been: “don’t call it a burger if it isn’t beef!” Somehow, it still rings true to say, if it is a veggie burger, why not just call it a veggie patty sandwich? Or a salmon sandwich vs. salmon burgers?

Guess who is laughing now?

As hot as summer days can be, somehow it is easier grilling outside than it is to cook indoors.  Like most citizens living in the States, I love my hamburger! So much so, I can have it every day of the week happily. This summer, every Saturday or Sunday, I have been grilling for my family and friends.  I love the smell of charcoal, the sizzle of the meat as it hits the hot grill, and the flavors of tender marinated fish, beef or chicken. Fun summer drinks to accompany such as Anja’s recipe for lime coconut drink seals the deal on the perfect fun summer BBQ gathering.

Since I can’t live on just beef burgers, this summer I used ground turkey as a plain canvas to carry flavors of a variety of herbs, spices and vegetables. So far, my turkey burgers have had many of my guests asking for seconds!

Next time you want to grill turkey burgers, try these combinations:

For one lb. of ground turkey, add 4 tablespoons each of chopped fresh basil and sundried tomatoes, ½ cup finely chopped onion, 1 tsp salt, pepper, and ½ teaspoon garlic powder, 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Mix all the ingredients well, form patties and place in the fridge for 15 minutes to firm prior to grilling.

Another great combination is 1lb of ground turkey, 1 teaspoon ground cumin, salt and pepper (each), 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and ½ cup finely chopped onion.

Try taco seasoning to develop a Southwestern burger with all the trimmings of avocado, tomatoes, jalapenos and lettuce.

Be creative! Try any of your favorite combination of flavors and share them with us.
May you have many warm sunny summer days, great family and friends to gather and enjoy a lazy days by the pool and GRILL!
