Schwellenmätteli Bern

by Anja

Summer has come to an end here in Switzerland. As always, it’s been way too short – for my taste. I am a sunshine girl. Having lived in Los Angeles and Miami for a couple of years I still find it hard to deal with the four seasons here in Switzerland with its short and unpredictable summers and long winters. Of course, there are a few nice things about every season, but summer is my favorite by far. So, naturally, I try to make the most out of each summer day.

One of my summer favorites here in Bern is the Schwellenmätteli restaurant, nicely located at the river shores. The terrace is a platform that goes over the river, making it a top spot for a nice cool drink. Or breakfast. As you know, I love to go out for breakfast and the Schwellenmätteli terrace is one of the few nice breakfast places in Bern. Though they serve breakfast all year around, for me only the terrace on a warm summer day does it. Sundays a lavish brunch is offered, but I personally prefer their light weekday breakfast.

Right next to the actual Schwellenmätteli restaurant is the associated Casa restaurant serving Italian food. The menu is ever changing, making it interesting to come back. When Roland and I went there a few weeks ago, we had a grilled sea bass and flambéed scampis, both very delicious.

I can’t wait for next summer to come and with it more visits to Schwellenmätteli.
